I was having lunch with Tom Glebas at Very Best in Pottstown 5 days after my 65th birthday. We were discussing retirement and retirement activities – though neither of us were retired.

The very spot in the Very Best where it all started.
Some day there will probably be an historical marker commemorating the event.

“What I would like to do is get a RV and drive around the country” said Tom, a well-known intrepid traveler. “Oh, I said – what does Marie (Tom’s wife) think of that. “She hates the idea” said Tom. “her idea of a fun trip is to visit the mall.”
“Susan isn’t big on this kind of thing either.” I replied –Why don’t you and I – and maybe Steve Van Meter and Bill Martin (fellow Old White Guys) buy an RV or two and travel the country? [Tom’s comment: I think the exact words were more succinct, something like, “You spec it, I’ll buy it.”]

So the idea was born. I called Steve, who had started the process of doing something like this when his wife retired, but discontinued the effort when his wife decided it would be too much work. Steve was in. I later talked to Bill, who turned down the opportunity. So three old white guys figured we could do it on one small-ish RV. Steve had previously looked into a “Class C” RV like the Winnebago Navion, and that seemed like a good compromise between spaciousness and both maneuverable and park-able. Marcus Kolb has a Sprinter camper that is roughly this size (though a bit smaller) and had been enthusiastically talking up the concept for a year or so.
