Steinhatchee, Florida – that’s it, just Steinhatchee!

That’s the only stop for this trip as we experiment with different travel modes. We started with a cannonball run around the Great Lakes – 6 hours of driving per day. That pace was just too much. Then, we did the Mid-Atlantic Historic Coastal Cities Tour avoiding I-95 and limiting our daily pace to 3 hours per day. But even that felt hectic as we had to set up and break camp every day. So, at just slightly over 3 hours from Orlando, Steinhatchee, Florida is our one and only stop for a week, January12 – January 18, 2023.

Scott and Susan picked up Tom on the evening of Tuesday, 1/10, and everyone stayed the night at Scott’s house on Southport Road in Kissimmee.  On Wednesday, Scott and Tom drove to La Mesa RV, where Khan had been awaiting repairs since mid-December.  Despite its lengthy stay there, not all the repairs were completed, and the solar charging circuit still didn’t work, but door hinges and such did seem to work better.

On Thursday January 12th, Steve joined us at Southport and we departed around 11AM for the Steinhatchee RV Park that Steve had made a reservation at.  The drive was more interesting when Steve suggested we make a detour off of the interstate and turnpike for the back roads, and we arrived mid-afternoon to the worst RV park we have stayed at yet.

Oh, the sites you see when you take the road less traveled
History Lesson – People need to appreciate these more.
Caged specimen at the train zoo. Trains are always cool!

While the owners were sincere, the spots are so close together that there was no room for a picnic table or fire pit – nor trees or such.  (Note from Tom – Scott abhors campfires, so I’m not sure why no fire pit is an issue) We had to move to another site that didn’t have a light pole on it to be able to open our awning and extend our bump-out.  When parked in the middle of our spot the front wheels are inches off the ground and the leveling system still had to give up on leveling us – the last step out of the door is a “doozy.”  But we’re too lazy to move.

At first, they put is in the only site with a light pole in the middle of it?

The bathroom has room for only one person of each gender, and the men’s room has no mirror, making shaving a hit-or-miss proposition.

Sparse bathroom – No heat, chilly when the temperature is below freezing We added the mirror.

While Steinhatchee is too small for a grocery store chain, it does have lots of good restaurants, and we ate at Roy’s Restaurant which had a brilliant view of the sunset over the water as well as excellent seafood.  Tom met a woman who runs a charter boat business while taking a picture of the sunset – we may do a charter ride later in the trip.

Do you come here often?
