Friday was a long and mostly good day. After a leisurely morning ritual and breakfast, we departed Jennings KOA for our next stop at the Allatoona Lake Campground (and resort!) We stopped at Walmart on the way to get stuff that Scott and Tom (mostly Scott) forgot, and we once more forgot to buy Anthony and bike helmet (and Anthony couldn’t be bothered to join Scott and Tom in the store).
Next stop was Buc-ee’s, just north of the Walmart in Perry, GA, for the cheapest Diesel we’ve seen (at $3.10/gallon) and an opportunity to introduce Anthony to the joys of the Wall ‘O Jerky and such. While Scott fueled Khan, Tom and Anthony went through the very crowded store and salty snacks and Jerky were purchased.
After the stop we hit the first serious traffic slowdowns of the trip, around Atlanta. We arrived at the campground around 4PM, and parked in a spacious spot near the lake. Anthony immediately went swimming followed by Tom a little later. Scott and Tom answered emails and did some work calls.
Dinner was a group project, with Tom cooking bacon for bacon cheeseburgers, and frys from frying sliced raw potatoes. Anthony and Scott husked corn on the cob, which we cooked in our Instant Pot, and Scott cooked burgers on our portable grill.
After dinner we fired up our three electric bikes – the first time for the new bike Anthony and Tom assembled on Thursday. Tom – riding as always way too fast – took us on some local roads, then on a Lake Altoona bike/walking trail that was great with frequent signs detailing the civil war battle fought at the lake. Unfortunately, it was getting dark so we returned to the campground. When we returned to the campground Anthony went swimming again – until it got really dark. The weather was perfect for all our outside activities – we could not have had a better day to enjoy Allatoona Lake – it was a shame we got there so late.
