Open Range, Quirky RV and Falconry

Today was mainly a travel day – we departed the campground around 8:30AM planning an arrival at the Widener’s ranch around 2PM.

Custer, SD is full of Bison sculptures painted in various motifs.

We’ve been having strange problems with both the Winnebago camper and the Sprinter chassis it is built on.  For several cycles of extending and retracting the slide-out, we’ve noticed that it does not appear to close all the way on one end.  When retracting it at the campground, it got worse. So, Tom had Scott pull the offending side in while it retracted.  When we stopped for lunch we extended it part way to make it easier to prepare and eat lunch, and then when we retracted it, the side was flush for the first time in months.  Maybe it will stay “fixed”.

The scenery is wide open and stunning. Scott coined I-90, the Loneliest Interstate.

Big Horn Mountain Range in the distance.

As we drove through some of the most beautiful scenery in the west, Anthony made sure that the glare from the window did not keep him from seeing his phone screen (when he was awake.)

We saw a roadside Dad Joke, but couldn’t get a photo in time, so you’ll have to live with this description. It was a kitchen range with stovetop and oven in the middle of a field. The oven door was open and a large sign above it said, “Open Range”.

Similarly, after we filled the diesel tank the gauge stayed stuck on half.  After an hour or so that seemed to resolve itself as well.  So we now have 0, 1, 2, or 3 issues.

The ranch was very nice and everyone except Anthony is now staying in a full-size bedroom with a full-sized bathroom, which is nice after several days on the road.  There is a nice kitchen, and laundry facilities, and fast internet so we don’t need to rely on Starlink.  We feel like we are in the lap of luxury.

Once we settled in at the guest house, Peter Widener (5th Generation) showed Tom and Anthony his falcons that he raises. He was feeding them (including several pre-fledgling chicks ) who were fed by their parents.

We had a nice dinner with Peter and Maggie Widener, and then slept soundly.  Tomorrow Fly Fishing with Peter Widener as we await the arrival of fellow Lynnewood Hall folks.
