Welcome to Canada

Spencer and the Goats

We awoke for one last breakfast at the Phillips Resort, then said goodbye and hit the road for a trip along trail we had taken Monday along the banks of Lake Superior, but continuing into Canada at Thunder Bay.

Our first stop was for lunch – we picked a wayside (Minnesotan for rest stop) that should have been convenient, but this one apparently no longer existed.  So we ate at a pullout, but then stopped at a promising overlook.

Nice view during lunch

At that overlook we learned that High Falls was just ahead – on the Pigeon River separating the US from Canada was the highest waterfall in Minnesota – we had to see that!  So – a short 1.1 mile roundtrip hike – with a few stairs at the end – yielded lots of pictures and memories of the second waterfall in two days.  Then a quick and painless border crossing and we were in Canada.

We had been seeing lots of signs and information on the Lake Superior Circle Tour – and we realized we had seen several of the US attractions around Duluth.

After we stopped at our campground in Thunder Bay – the KOA Thunder Bay Holiday , we went searching for food and adventure.  Food was a fine Caribbean place.  On the way back, Tom asked if we could do one more scenic overlook, as we had just passed the sign for the Terry Fox Monument three times.  We climbed the hill through a newly-repaved – and lighted – dedicated entry road.  The visitor centre (Proper Canadian spelling, eh) was closed, but there was a sign highlighting all of the Canadian places on the Lake Superior Circle tour – including Winnie the Pooh and Wawa.  We plan to see these in the coming days.
