Who Has Time to Sightsee?

Today was a scheduled for a bit of sightseeing, then barreling home by nightfall.  We had three targets, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum which was maybe 10 minutes from our campsite, Crown Point State Historic Site which was also close, then Fort Ticonderoga which was maybe 30 minutes from Crown Point.  However, since we were on the road shortly after 8AM, that was not going to be.  The maritime museum opened at 10:30AM, Fort Ticonderoga at 10AM.  While that might work for your standard lazy tourist, both times were too late for us.  Crown Point, mainly being an outdoor attraction, was open 24 hours, though.

We walked around the park, learned about who built each of the two forts, who blew them up or destroyed them, and the differences between the common soldier and the officers.  We learned that the British fort was built to house over 4,000 men, and marveled at how – in the pre-revolutionary period – the could be provisioned despite being near the river.  Then we hit the road.

The most exciting part of the return was getting the cheapest diesel we could find in New Jersey.  New Jersey is now the ONLY state in the US that does not allow self-service, so watched a somewhat elderly fellow pump our gas for us.  Scott was told to take a picture, but felt sorry for the poor guy and didn’t want to embarrass him by taking a picture like a circus clown.

We arrived at Scott’s house around 4PM, unloaded Khan and sent Tom home in Polo.  Another successful OWGRV trip completed.
