Back to Steinhatchee

Today OWGRV launched our most ambitious trip yet – Kissimmee, FL to San Diego, CA.

We departed Scott’s Southport home a bit after noon, stopped at the local Publix to stock up with food, and headed towards Perry, FL just North of Steinhatchee, where loyal followers will remember we stayed for around a week in January of 2023.

Before we go on… In case you didn’t notice, this post’s cover image, repeated here, is upside down.

Here it is below with the correct orientation.

And, here it is with a wider angle.

This was a 4 hour drive, as we are trying to take more time to experience the area and drive less.  The drive was so (comparatively) short and easy that we were scheduled to arrive at 5pm.  We decided to stop in Steinhatchee and have dinner at Roy’s Restaurant – a bit of memory lane, a bit to see how it made it through Hurricane Idalia.

While waiting to ask our waitress about the experience, Tom found a news report that Roy’s was closed for 131 days.  When we got a chance to ask the waitress how high the water got, she said “to the ceiling”.

Normal water level at Roy’s restaurant, probably 3-4 feet below the outide deck.
Storm surge reached the ceiling, which we estimate was at least 10 feet tall.

After our complaints about the last Steinhatchee-area RV park, we were certain that tonight’s Old Pavillion RV Park would be better.  We were promised breathtaking views and quiet.  That turned out to be true.  However, this is the first time we paid $50 (in cash), but they do not have a bathhouse at all.  Something to put on the checklist in the future.

Tomorrow we are staying at a “Boondockers Welcome” free spot near Panama City, FL.  Our experience with these “free” spots has been good, in general.  Wait for tomorrow’s post…
