Wide Open Spaces, and Aliens

Today was a bit unusual, as Tom had THREE one-hour calls for VideoRay, and both Scott and Tom had our bi-weekly Big Brothers meeting with our Littles.  All the meetings were on Teams – the Littles were given laptops and headphones to talk to us.

Tom’s first meeting was at 8AM Mountain time, so we did that at the Hobbs RV Park.  Then we drove for 50 minutes or so to Maljamar Rest Area , which looked like it had lots of space, restrooms, and a good view of the sky for our solar panels and Starlink.

We try to deploy the Starlink whenever we are on critical calls since we have discovered that while using our phones as hotspots should work fine, in many cases it does not.  Starlink has not let us down yet.

While Scott managed to get his headphones to work for our Big Brothers meeting in Maljamar, Tom’s earbuds died from lack of battery.  “They had full bars when I last checked” he said… (Deja Vu)

We then drove of for another hour or so until Tom’s next meetings (and lunch.)  We were headed towards Roswell NM to check it out, and that involved some back roads.  We ended up at a pretty desolate turnout on a sparsely used road, but it was very pretty.

With all the meetings behind us, we drove through Roswell, taking pictures of alien stuff but not getting out of Khan except to pump more diesel.  We ain’t gonna be suckered into spending money on kitschy quirky nonsense. So here is the nickel tour of Roswell Alien Artifacts:

Self-Proclaimed World’s Largest Pistachio and Pistaciholand

Then on to Alamogordo and the Alamogordo / White Sands KOA . There was a lot of snow along the trip across Apache Summit.

The thin white line at the base of the San Andreas Range is White Sands National Park (White Sand Dunes).

This KOA was pretty nice – more spacious spots than most RV Parks, a functioning bath house – and they let us borrow plastic toboggans to ride down the dunes tomorrow.

“You take the blue toboggin… the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red disc… you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Hopefully, nobody gets hurt tomorrow at White Sands!

We then ate a very nice meal at the closest (and turns out most popular) Mexican Restaurant in Alamogordo. When we left, the line for a table was out the door.
