Our trip actually started yesterday – Thursday the 9th. Scott flew into San Diego on Wednesday the 8th from the Offshore Technology Conference, and stayed at hotel near the VideoRay office until Tom arrived the next day. We had stored the RV since our last trip at a campground near the one we stayed at last night.
Scott thought he would pick up Khan, and move it to the campground before Tom landed around 4PM. That was not to be, since Scott forgot which campground the RV was in (there are two related adjacent campgrounds,) so he couldn’t find the camper.
Not to worry – Tom knew exactly where it was. Scott picked up Tom at the airport, and drove to Mission Bay RV Resort where both Khan and a campsite were waiting. For dinner we went to a crowded but fine In-N-Out burger. We went back to our campsite and crashed soon thereafter.
Since we had no provisions, we went to Konitos – an apparently Hawaiian place with incredibly generous two-meals-worth portions disguised as a “small breakfast.” There were no convenient Walmarts, and we just needed food, so we went to Vons in the same parking lot.
No real problems with our first provisioning there, except for the sky-high prices and difficulty getting chemical-laden, genetically-modified food. Apparently, Californians will pay huge amounts for organic, non-GMO stuff. But we found what we needed and joined the Vons club which apparently gets us discounts at Albertsons and Safeway and other grocery stores that we’ll likely never visit.
Back at Mission Bay, Scott went for a quick hot tub soak (familiar, as he was, with the campground from our last trip) while Tom did the work of making sure everything was ready to go. On to Lake Isabella.
We had heard that it has been raining a lot in Southern California, and saw some serious-looking storms as we drove through some serious-looking scenery. We had a bit of rain, but no serious issues as we arrived in the Lake Isabella/Kern River KOA
Exciting news – we plan on getting the original OWGRV band together! Steve Van Meter will be joining us for the last few days of this trip in at Grand Junction Airport in Colorado. After a BBQ Chicken drumsticks and sides meal expertly prepared by Scott, we talked with Steve for a bit and we’re in the process of making airline reservations and final plans.

And best news of all–this trip will include a steam train ride!
