Holdin’ in Golden

First a few photos of scenes along the way…

This is our second day in Golden, BC. We had planned to use it as another day for touring Banff, but after 3 days in Glacier, and fighting the crowds yesterday in Banff, we decided we had enough of the mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers and lakes for a while and needed another diversion.

The day started early for Scott, who had to eat breakfast before a 6:30AM call followed by a 7AM call and then two more calls.  After the 4 meetings and calls he went back to sleep for a while. Tom did the laundry during Scott’s meetings.

Around late morning we left for lunch in Golden at Papa Bear’s Kitchen , then on to the Golden Museum where we learned quite a bit about the history of Golden.  One of the notable residents was David Thompson, who mapped one fifth of North America, but died in poverty and obscurity.  The museum was very well done with a friendly docent.  One of the exhibits was the printing press that produced the newspaper the Golden Era – which was referred to locally as the Golden Error.

The large belt driven printing press. It was described as scary to operate and mainly operated by younger, less wise, individuals, per the docent. The older wiser ones “knew better.”

Then to the local Save On Foods grocery store (the Canadians either thinking literally or running out of unique names for grocery stores) to top off a few items and get some local meat.  The checkout lady said she was originally from Florida, but moved to the frigid north when she married a Canadian in 1981.  She said it got down to 36 below zero last winter (not sure whether that was Fahrenheit or Celsius, but they converge at 40 below.)

Then back to the RV for relaxing reading (for Scott) and work (for Tom.)

Then Tom found some bike trails along the Columbia River in town.  We took a 7.4 mile ride along the river, around most of the airport, and down a few wrong turns and one residential driveway. Needless to say, Tom was frustrated with his navigational skills on this ride. While near the airport, we saw a pair of parachutists landing and the watched helicopter from which they jumped land.

Parachutist about to land.
Seemed odd that they were using a helicopter for the jump ride.

Then back to the campsite to grill some expensive but delicious hamburgers, and we were inside the camper with everything put away before the rain started.

The view from the campsite of the western ridge along the Columbia River.
Rain moving into in the area.
The same scene as above (zoomed in) as the rain blanketed the ridge.
