Scott calls this special post, “Captain’s Log Supplemental, the Teleporting Level.”
Loyal blog followers will recall our leveler system blowout, and how we had to use manual jacks for several weeks until it was repaired. We used the level from our Walmart toolkit to ensured our RV was indeed level, not just stable. Some time after we had the system repaired, and on a new trip, the level that we used completely disappeared. Tom asked Scott if he had seen it, to which he replied, “No.” and the mystery of the teleporting level began. Tom said “well – it’s gotta show up sometime.” It had been missing without a trace for 2-1/2 trips.
Before we go into the story of how it teleported back to the window ledge, exactly where it was last seen, we have to go into one of the banes of travel in a modern RV.
There are lots of warning sounds that happen when you need to be careful not to do something that will hurt you or the RV. Loyal readers will recall us driving for miles with the leveler system complaining loudly that something was wrong (we knew that,) but we waited too long to disable the beeping – turning up the music as loud as possible to drown it out.
On Monday night we had a similar problem with an alert – sounded like a short siren – just loud enough to disrupt sleep but not loud enough for our neighbors to hear – that started around 9PM. This had happened once before – and we never figured out what it was warning us of, or exactly how it went away. Trying everything BUT cycling the house batteries on Monday night, Tom must have accidently knocked the level off a shelf into the paper towel holder hole onto the ledge where it belonged. That was two days ago. We found it this morning and don’t know how we could have not seen it in that time.
One of the first things new RV owners should do is disable these kind of useless by annoying warnings. We have already removed the batteries from the smoke detectors – one in the kitchen that went off anytime you cooked anything, and one is Scott’s bunk a few feet away that also never went off but warned of low batteries. If we ever find a way to disable this latest alarm, we will.
