A New Mode of Transportation for OWGrv

Scott had such a good time riding the Ithaca Central railroad in Ithaca, New York in his Speeder (Rail Car) in September that he decided to join the New England Rail Excursions run on the Adirondack Railroad on October 1st and 2nd.  After asking most everyone he knew if they would like to join him, he lucked out and got Tom Glebas, fellow OWGRV’er, as his Speeder companion.  We then decided to make this an official OWGRV trip by pulling the Speeder with Khan, and staying in it one of the three days of what turned out to be a 4 day trip.

Speeder Pride

On Friday, September 30th, we left Khan’s Pennsylvania home (Scott’s aircraft hangar) around 10:40AM for Remsen, NY, where participants were allowed to “set on” their speeders on the tracks between 4PM and 6PM.  While we were hoping to make 6PM, we made excellent time and arrived at 4:14PM.  In true NARCOA fashion, more than ½ the participants were already there in line to set on.  We set on the speeder and test-started it without difficulty, then dropped the trailer in our nicely-set-aside campsite for the duration of the run while we went for dinner and our inevitably-forgotten grocery items.

Voss BBQ – Quaint but No Cigar

We had previously researched available local restaurants, and we were thrilled to find one that was supposed to be open only on Friday nights.  However, it was closed, and appears to have been for quite a while.  Always in the mood for BBQ, we went to the next-closest place for BBQ, which was 20 minutes away and a bit of a disappointment.  While “Voss” has adequate food and a pretty cool milk-bottle sign, suffice it to say 5 minutes was a more appropriate side trip from Remsen than the 20 we invested here.  We then went to the nearby Aldi grocery store to buy K-cup coffee and powered creamer, and found they no longer sell powdered creamer at all, and the smallest white liquid you could buy was a full quart of half-and-half.  It would have been a good idea to have a breakfast checklist…

Bedding Down alongside the Tracks

We returned to Khan, fired up the generator, did some quick emails, and fell into a pretty good sleep (for old men) as the temperature dropped.
